The Director of Campaigns and Elections will be responsible for overseeing and advancing NEA’s political strategies and efforts and lead program and campaign work for NEA. Duties will include managing field-based and headquarters’ staff and financial resources and programs, in order to recruit, retain, engage and empower NEA members in support of various campaigns and elections strategies. The Director of Campaigns and Elections must be able to move NEA’s political objectives forward in a complex environment while balancing the competing needs of various stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities:

Develop and oversee assigned NEA political campaigns by managing the development, execution, evaluation, and continuous improvement of targeted innovative political strategies and programs.
Identify and move to scale successful political programs.
Develop and implement cooperative partnerships with state and local affiliates and other key organizations in the progressive infrastructure to move shared political and campaigns and election priorities.
Assess and co-design innovative and effective learning experiences for staff and leaders to become focused on empowering members to understand and support political programs and strategies.
Act thoughtfully and strategically in rapidly changing internal and external environments; advise staff and elected leaders on effective political and/or campaigns and elections strategies.
Expand the intelligent use of technology to recruit, retain, and engage staff, leaders, members and communities to advance the political goals of the organization.
Drive sophisticated use of data to enhance political strategies and decisions related to members’ values and activism.
Develop metrics and targets for social media platforms and online advocacy programs. Monitor trends in social media and ensure the organization is early adapting to new effective platforms and practices.
Monitor social media metrics to inform grassroots strategies/targeting and online advocacy efforts. Work with cross-departmental teams, affiliates and national coalition partners to plan joint strategies for social media campaigns, and, where appropriate, lead coordinated campaign plans.
Manage headquarters and cross departmental teams carrying out political campaigns under demanding timelines and with multiple stakeholders.
Develop and manage campaign and program budgets that ensure strong stewardship of members’ dues,
Manages effectively by shaping roles and assignments in ways that leverage and develop people’s skills.
Oversee affiliate support for state legislative sessions and maximizing leverage thought state governance to help advance NEA’s agenda.
Continue to increase the numbers of NEA members running for office including their training and support during their campaigns.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required.
A minimum of ten years of campaigns and elections and/or political leadership experience; with at least three years of executive-level program and staff experience preferred.
Management experience within a union environment strongly preferred.
Proven skills as a political strategist and in overseeing successful campaigns and elections efforts in management roles.
Experience managing large scale or statewide political or voter engagement campaigns.
Familiarity with political data, latest technologies, and best practices in the field.
Proven experience successfully managing individuals, teams, projects, budgets, and campaigns.
Background in budget management and campaign finance.
Knowledge of the legal aspects of electoral campaigns at the state and national level.
Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations.
State legislative experience.
Effective skills in supervision, decision-making, oral/written communications, policy analysis, interpersonal relations, team building, and collaboration.
Established high standards of performance to ensure accountability for work results.
Experience working collaboratively across a large organization to ensure effective integration and alignment of resources and programs.
Frequent travel required.
