Job Description:
This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Academy, Facilities Engineering Branch, Public Works Section, New London, CT.
Job Responsibilities:
You would serve as a steam plant operator, performing preventative and routine maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, performing tests, and analyzing results on a variety of equipment.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
- Operating dual fuel boiler, natural gas/#2 fuel fired boilers.
- Taking established pressure and temperature readings, operating pumps, burners and manual or automatic controls to supply 90 PSI steam pressure.
- Making scheduled and unscheduled rounds, checking condensate systems, feed pump systems, fuel oil system, chemical feed systems, air systems, and water in emulsifier systems.
- Making frequent checks of water levels, water temperatures, fuel oil temperatures, and burner operation.
- Repairing and maintaining large air conditioning systems that perform a variety of functions.
- Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment.

- ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT).
- KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.
- OPERATION OF BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT.
- TECHNICAL PRACTICES (THEORETICAL, PRECISE, ARTISTIC).
- USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS.
- ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATION, ETC. (OTHER THAN BLUEPRINT READING).
- DEXTERITY AND SAFETY.
Qualifying experience includes journeyman level work performing routine and preventative maintenance on boilers and associated equipment.
