The Wake County Food Security Program has hosted AmeriCorps VISTA members for over four years. Our members work to address hunger at the systems level, identifying barriers to access and building the capacity of organizations and individuals to make our county more food secure. Our team is currently in the process of updating our comprehensive food security plan, with a goal of identifying 5-6 strategies grounded in equity and systems change. Wake County is home to 6 large colleges/universities all of which report students facing food insecurity. There has been recent momentum at gaining a better understanding of and solutions to address college hunger and the College Hunger VISTA will build on prior research to move the needle on solutions. This position will enhance networking among the colleges and universities within our county, share best practices for addressing college hunger, and inform leaders in best strategies to address the unique needs of college students.
he College Hunger VISTA will conduct research to better understand issues faced by and key differences among the diverse populations seeking further education in Wake County. This research will be utilized to inform the 2022-2025 Comprehensive Food Plan for Wake County as well as inform leadership within the county. The VISTA will support and develop sustainable networking and relationship building opportunities between partners active in college hunger work and/or those looking to better understand and support students facing food insecurity.
